JUPEM is one of the oldest Government agencies in Malaysia. Its first survey activity started in 1885 with the inauguration of the Johor State Survey Department. Between 1985 until 1957, other states survey departments were established including a topography department. These entities were subsequently integrated in phases to form the present organization. In addition, the government approved the formation of the Directorate of National Mapping Malaysia in 1965 with the mandate and responsibility on surveying, mapping, topography and geodesy.
