The university was officially incorporated on 24th December 1992. With about 30 academic staff, the University opened its doors to the first batch of 118 students on 8th August 1993. The students were registered in the two pioneering faculties, the Faculty of Social Science and the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology. Two academic support centres were also established: the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia, and the Centre for Academic Information Services. Read more.. |

UiTM is Malaysia's largest institution of higher learning in terms of size and population. It has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception in 1956 and it is still growing. Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) was initially established in 1995 as a research unit with the objective to promote research in the field of marine science in Sabah. The unit was upgraded to institute status since June 2000. BMRI is one of the centre of excellence in UMS specializing in research, development and commercialization of aquatic resources with particularly emphasis in aquaculture and marine science. The Coastal and Offshore Engineering Institute (COEI), was formally established by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1990, with approval from the Ministry of Education Malaysia, to fill a critical gap in coastal and offshore engineering research and consultancy works in Malaysia. The Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) was established in August 1991 to undertake research and post-graduate training in Marine Science and Coastal Ecosystems. It provides the institutional mechanism for mobilizing and integrating the University's considerable expertise and resources in marine science (which are currently spread over a number of science and non-science teaching schools). The main objective of CEMACS is to enhance the capability of conducting integrated inter- and multi-disciplinary studies leading towards solving problems related to marine and coastal ecosystems. The Institute of Bioscience (IBS), Universiti Putra Malaysia was established on the 1 st of August 1996 and was the first research institute founded in UPM. IBS was established to boost Research and Development (R&D) and postgraduate training in various fields of biological sciences. The emphasis on research was given to strengthen the scientific and technological capabilities of the country as well as to develop relevant human capital to support the Industrial and Agricultural Master Plan. Industry Networking and Community Service Center (INComS), previously known as University Industry Linkage Center (PPUI) was established on 15th March 2005. The center was set up to disseminate knowledge which can be achieved through establishing linkages and networking with the industry and community.
